Discover the Ultimate Summer Adventures: Top Activities and Hidden Gems Across Maine

A summer evening at the Falmouth Town Landing.

As the days grow warmer, my mind starts buzzing with all the exciting things I want to do this summer. Every year, I set out with big plans to fill my summer with fun adventures, but by the time autumn arrives, I often realize many of those plans have slipped through the cracks.

This year, I am determined to change that! By creating this list, I hope to stay on track and make the most of the season and maybe even inspire you to create your own summer bucket list along the way.

1. Dive into the Ocean and Explore a New Beach

No Maine summer is complete without a refreshing dip in the Atlantic—and yes, that includes fully dunking your head! Living near the coast provides endless options, so why not try a beach you’ve never visited? This summer, I plan to explore Higgins Beach in Scarborough, Willard Beach in South Portland, and the picturesque Kettle Cove in Cape Elizabeth. Each offers its own unique charm, perfect for a sunny day by the sea.

2. Visit a lighthouse

Maine is home to some of the most picturesque lighthouses along its rugged coastline. Whether you’re a photography enthusiast or simply love the charm of these iconic structures, there’s a lighthouse waiting for you to explore. From the famous Portland Head Light to the serene Cape Neddick “Nubble” Light, each lighthouse offers stunning views and a unique piece of Maine history. Make it a goal to visit at least one this summer!

3. Try a New Ice Cream Flavor

What’s summer without indulging in ice cream? With so many fantastic ice cream shops nearby, this one’s a no-brainer. To add a bit of fun, I’m challenging myself to try flavors I’ve never had before. So far, I haven’t met an ice cream I didn’t like! If you’re looking for ideas, check out these 8 must-visit Maine ice cream shops and food trucks for your next sweet treat.

4. Plan a Romantic Date Night in Portland

Portland is packed with amazing restaurants perfect for a summer date night. One spot I’m excited to visit is Gross Confection Bar, a dessert bar dedicated entirely to satisfying your sweet tooth. Whether it’s indulging in their decadent creations or exploring other local dining gems, Portland never disappoints for a memorable night out.

5. Catch a Double Feature at the Drive-In

One of my favorite nostalgic summer activities is a night at the drive-in. This summer, you can plan to relive the magic with a trip to the nearby Saco Drive-In Theater. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy a double feature under the stars and create new memories while soaking up the charm of this classic summer tradition.

6. View the Sunset From a New Vantage Point

While familiar sunset spots are always breathtaking, there’s something special about discovering a new perspective. Challenge yourself to find a fresh angle for your next sunset view. Consider iconic spots like a scenic lighthouse, a peaceful waterfront trail, or a bustling harbor. Whether it’s a serene overlook or a lively spot by the water, a new vantage point can make the sunset feel even more magical.

7. Explore Nearby Islands by Ferry

Plan a fun day trip by hopping on a ferry to visit one of the charming islands off the coast. These little escapes are perfect for soaking up warm summer weather. Spend your day biking along scenic paths, grabbing an ice cream, and enjoying the slower pace of island life. Don’t forget your camera, as these trips are full of picture-perfect moments that you will want to capture. Whether you have been before or it is your first visit, island adventures offer a refreshing change of scenery.

8. Hike a Scenic Mountain Trail

Find a trail that combines natural beauty with manageable terrain. For inspiration, check out places like Camden Hills State Park, home to Mount Battie, which offers sweeping views of Camden Harbor and Penobscot Bay. It’s perfect for those who prefer shorter, less strenuous hikes but still want an incredible view as a reward. Whether you’re an avid hiker or a beginner, a day on the trail is always a summer win.

9. Explore a Charming New Town

Spend a day exploring a picturesque town you’ve never visited before. Look for one with a mix of unique shops, cozy cafes, and local restaurants to make the trip memorable. For example, downtown Camden offers antique stores, upscale boutiques, and plenty of seafood eateries to enjoy. Discovering new spots is a great way to break your routine and soak up summer vibes.

10. Savor a Meal Outdoors

Take advantage of the warm weather by dining al fresco. Whether it’s grilling in your backyard, packing a picnic for the park, or finding a patio at a local restaurant, eating outdoors adds something special to your meal. Consider trying fresh summer dishes like grilled chicken kebabs or a big seasonal salad, and don’t forget the citronella candles for a cozy evening touch.

11. Visit a Local Farmers’ Market

Support local vendors and stock up on fresh produce, baked goods, flowers, and more at a nearby farmers’ market. It’s a fun way to spend a morning while connecting with your community and discovering unique finds. Markets like the Portland Farmers’ Market often have an amazing variety, from fruits and veggies to houseplants and artisan goods. Bring a tote bag—you never know what treasures you’ll find!

12. Cook or Bake Something from Scratch

There’s nothing quite as satisfying as making a recipe entirely from scratch. From homemade pasta to freshly baked bread, the flavors are always more rewarding when you know you’ve crafted every element by hand. This summer, challenge yourself to skip the shortcuts—no boxed mixes or pre-made ingredients allowed—and enjoy the pride of serving up something completely homemade.

13. Try Kayaking

Kayaking is a perfect summer activity to enjoy the water and take in the natural beauty around you. Look for local rental spots or places to launch, and consider planning a group outing to make it even more fun. Whether you paddle along a quiet river or explore the coastline, kayaking is a great way to soak up the sunshine and create lasting memories.

14. Get Lost in a Good Book

Summer is the perfect time to dive into a great read. Whether it’s a gripping thriller, a heartwarming novel, or an inspiring memoir, set aside time to relax with a book or two. Vacation days, lazy afternoons, or evenings by the water make ideal reading moments.

15. Go Strawberry Picking

Nothing says summer like picking your own fresh strawberries. Many farms offer pick-your-own options during the brief strawberry season, which typically runs from late June to late July. Enjoy the fresh air, the sweet scent of strawberries, and the satisfaction of gathering your own fruit. Plus, you’ll have plenty of berries for snacking, baking, or making jam!
