Kittery, Maine, offers the perfect blend of history, coastal beauty, and local charm
During a recent day trip, I explored some of Kittery’s best gems—starting with a visit to Lil’s Café, followed by a walk through history at Fort McClary, and ending with scenic views at Fort Foster.
Lil’s Café: Start the Day with a Treat
No trip to Kittery is complete without stopping by Lil’s Café, a cozy spot known for its delicious pastries and coffee. The atmosphere inside Lil’s is warm and inviting, with locals and visitors alike savoring their morning cup of joe. Their famous crullers are an absolute must-try—light, fluffy, and perfectly sweet, they melt in your mouth.
Pair your pastry with a robust cup of coffee or one of their specialty drinks. I chose the rose cold brew, which was wonderfully smooth with a rich coffee flavor and a delicate hint of rose. We also tried an almond croissant and a cinnamon roll, and both were excellent! If you're in the mood for something savory, their sandwiches looked equally tempting.
Fort McClary: Step Into History
After fueling up at Lil’s, I headed over to Fort McClary, a historic site that offers a glimpse into Maine’s military past. Perched on a hill overlooking the Piscataqua River, the fort has been standing guard since the late 1600s.
The fort itself is well-preserved, with a mix of original structures and restored sections that show the evolution of military architecture. There are plenty of informational plaques throughout the site, making it easy to understand the history and significance of the fort.
One of the highlights is the view from the fort’s top lookout point—you can see all the way across the river to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and watch the boats navigate the waters below.
Fort Foster: Coastal Beauty and Outdoor Fun
To round out the day, I made my way to Fort Foster. Located on Gerrish Island, this former military fort is now a coastal park with plenty of trails, picnic areas, and stunning views of the ocean. It’s the perfect place to relax and take in the natural beauty of Maine’s coastline.
The beach here is quiet and peaceful, with rocky shores perfect for exploration. The park offers stunning panoramic views of the surrounding islands and lighthouses. Fort Foster is also a great spot for families, featuring picnic areas and accessible walking paths that cater to all ages.
If you’re feeling adventurous, there are several trails that take you through wooded areas and along the water’s edge. It’s an ideal spot for photography or just sitting and enjoying the sea breeze.
Kittery’s blend of history, food, and nature makes it a fantastic day-trip destination. Starting with a treat at Lil’s Café, learning about Maine’s military past at Fort McClary, and ending the day with coastal views at Fort Foster, you get to experience the best this charming town has to offer.
Whether you’re looking for history, scenic beauty, or just a great cup of coffee, Kittery has it all.
