Savor the Flavors of Spring: What to Expect at Maine Maple Sunday

What is Maine Maple Sunday?

Every March, as winter begins to fade, Maine celebrates one of its sweetest traditions, Maine Maple Sunday, a day dedicated to the state’s maple syrup season. This annual event invites visitors to explore local sugarhouses, watch the syrup-making process in action, and, of course, enjoy delicious maple-themed treats!

From warm syrup drizzled over pancakes to maple cotton candy and homemade fudge, it’s the perfect way to welcome spring while supporting local producers. Whether you're a longtime fan of Maine maple or experiencing it for the first time, this event is a must for any food lover.

When is Maine Maple Sunday?

Traditionally held on the fourth Sunday of March, Maine Maple Sunday has grown into a weekend-long celebration. Now, thanks to the Maine Maple Producers Association, sugarhouses across the state welcome visitors on both Saturday and Sunday, offering even more opportunities to experience the magic of Maine maple.

Tip: Arrive early if you plan to enjoy the pancake breakfast! Parking fills up quickly at this event, and lines for pancakes can get long, so an early start will help you beat the crowds.

Where to celebrate Maine Maple Sunday?

To find a participating sugarhouse near you, check the event map from the Maine Maple Producers Association. Each location offers a unique experience, so be sure to read the descriptions for details on their hours, activities, and special treats.

Celebrating Maine Maple Sunday at Dunn Family Farm

This year, I celebrated Maine Maple Sunday at Dunn Family Farm in Buxton, about a 30-minute drive from Portland. Dunn Family Maple has been producing Pure Maine Maple Syrup for five generations, using trees from Southern Maine. The farm is a popular spot for this annual event, drawing visitors for its homemade treats and fresh syrup.

Pancake Breakfast

The pancake breakfast was easily the highlight of the day. The pancakes were huge and made to order, with the option of plain or blueberry, then you can top it with a generous pour of fresh maple syrup. They offered a single pancake ($7) or a double stack ($10), along with maple coffee to complete the meal. It was worth the wait, and I’d definitely recommend getting there early to beat the crowds!

Mini Doughnuts

Dunn Family Farm is also known for its mini doughnuts, which are made fresh and served hot. You could choose between classic sugar-coated or go all in with maple cream and bacon bits on top. The best part? They had two separate lines—one for pancakes and one for doughnuts—so the wait times were manageable.

Syrup + more!

Of course, I couldn’t leave without taking home some maple goodies. I picked up a couple of bottles of maple syrup and a Maple Whoopie Pie to enjoy later. There were plenty of other maple products available, from cotton candy to maple candies, making it hard to choose just one!

If you’re looking for a fun way to experience Maine’s maple season, Dunn Family Farm is a great spot to celebrate. Whether you’re there for the syrup, the food, or just to soak in the tradition, it’s a sweet way to welcome spring.
